THE NATIVE WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF THE NWT (NWA NWT)
NWA IS A NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT WAS INCORPORATED IN 1977 TO EMPOWER AND SUPPORT INDIGENOUS WOMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES THROUGHOUT THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES. NWA NWT’S GUIDING PRINCIPLE IS THAT ALL INDIGENOUS ANCESTRY WILL BE TREATED WITH DIGNITY, RESPECT AND EQUALITY AND BENEFITS AND SERVICES WILL BE EXTENDED TO ALL NO MATTER WHERE ONE LIVES AND REGARDLESS OF TRIBAL HERITAGE.
NWA NWT is affiliated with the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC). NWA NWT is committed to being the voice of Indigenous women in the Northwest Territories and to building relationships with all levels of government and other organizations to ensure all Indigenous women and their families will live free from social and economic distress; to promote their sacred roles as valued and respected members in the community; and to preserve their culture, language and heritage.
NWA NWT as an organization is a territorial network of Indigenous women consisting of 9 employees, 14 Board Members including 2 Youth Representatives, 2 Elders, 51 members, and numerous partner organizations and agencies – all working together to achieve equality and justice for Indigenous women, their families and communities.
Our VISION moving forward is to become an Indigenous Women’s Centre of Excellence for advocacy work with programs and service delivery geared to what is happening in the current world of Indigenous women. In order to do this, NWA NWT recognizes the importance of building new and meaningful relationships with government and other partners who support our aspirations.
