Travel Assistance for family members of homicide victims

Yellowknife Victim Services Program now offers travel assistance to family members of homicide victims to attend trial held in the NWT. If you’re not a witness in the trial of your deceased loved one and wish to attend the trial, we may help cover certain travel cost.

Definition of family for the purpose of this funding

For the purpose of this funding, immediate family is defined as a mother, father, step-parent, brother, sister, spouse, common-law spouse, child, step-child, foster child, father-in-law, mother-in-law, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, son in-law, daughter in-law, brother in-law, sister in-law and any relative that the deceased resided with.

What is covered?

We may provide travel expenses which could include transportation, hotel, and meals along with short-term counseling.

  1. Maximum 2 close family members,
  2. Meals and hotel are a maximum of 5 nights,
  3. Transportation subsidy will vary depending on departure location,
  4. Counseling  up to a maximum of six (6) sessions
  5. All funds must be spent in the NWT,
  6. Funds are limited and are available on a first come first served basis.

Funding for this program has been provided by the NWT Victim Assistance Fund 

***Note: Witnesses who are required to testify will receive a subpoena indicating the date, time and location of court, and whether they are expected to testify for the prosecution or defense. If you have been subpoenaed by the prosecution lawyer; contact the Civilian Witness Travel Coordinator at 867-669-6900 for assistance. Witnesses who are required to attend court in a community outside of their home community can receive assistance with the expenses involved in travelling to another community.
